The Interinstitutional Metadata Maintenance Committee

ensures a common metadata management process. Thisumbrella organisation is in charge of the harmonisation andstandardisation of metadata at interinstitutional level in order to facilitate interoperability when integrating and exchanging data in and between the EU institutions and bodies. Its missionis also to define common exchange formats and transmission protocol rules

The IFC subgroup Formats Guidelines is mandated to elaborate guidelines to support the European Union institutions and bodies in ensuring the

interoperability of formats The use case ‘exchange of documents in the scope of the legislative process’(including international agreements) - bearing in mind the need to cater formultiple language versions - is considered as a priority The subgroup analyses the concrete representations of the semantic conceptsdefined in the Common Vocabulary in the institutions’ implementations basedon

XML (such as LegalDocML, FORMEX or other appropriate formats) in orderto, inter alia, identify similarities, divergences and possible compatibility problems and issues recommendations on those representations asappropriate

Technical/workflow-related - to streamline the transitioninto a genuine multichannel and collaborative workflow (thePublications Office is expected to take a lead in rationalisingand modernising the workflows/tools involved)

Discoverability-related - to share best practices and makeclear progress, so that the investment made by institutions to create and publish content could have a real communicationimpact.
